Much arithmetic has been done to figure out where I need to stop did short rows. It’s a lot easier to be able to count less than 30 stitches between w&ts instead of all the ones being knitted.

[[correct numbers below]]

I’ve also decided to be fancy and do the purple stripes in stockinette and the black in garter. We’ll see how it goes!

aha some of those numbers were wrong. I’d tried to do them in my head, and account for which way the knitting was going, and… and…

Turns out, each w&t is 18sts before the previous. That’s easy, and allows me to pre-emptively place markers on the first knit round of the wubble so that I can do this while watching a thing or on public transit without losing count of 135 stitches.

(I laid everything out on a spreadsheet to figure this out because I was tired of trying to puzzle it out on paper. That’s what the huge image is.)

I’m curious as to why designers and pattern-writers don’t include this sort of information on the pattern for those of us who aren’t great with mental arithmetic.

I’ve finally worked out an easier way of doing the short rows (instead of having to count 113, 135, etc, stitches for each short row) - the w&t are all the same number of stitches apart. This means that you can place markers on your first knit round of the stripe, and then not lose count when you suddenly realize you have to get off the train!

Going knitwise (RS) around the hat, here’s the numbers -

For the small, the first two w&t are 7 sts from the BOR, then 15 sts apart.
For the medium, the first two w&t are 9 sts from the BOR, then 18 sts apart.
For the large, the first two w&t are 10 sts from the BOR, then 21 sts apart.

Written out in the style of the instructions -

Row 1 [RS] : knit to 7[9,10] sts from the end, w&t
Row 2 [WS] : purl to 7[9,10] sts from the beginning, w&t
Row 3 [RS] : knit to 15[18,21] sts from last w&t
(same through Row 8, alternating p on WS and k on RS)
Row 9 [RS] : knit to end of round (67[81,94] sts).

Nearly done! The stripes went much more quickly when I could just count 18sts from the previous and put a marker to knit to. Now I just have to catch up with her to see if she wants more slouch or not…
