Using Ice Hands as the majority, though possibly not the full length, and then the thumb from A River Runs Through Mitt. My Salvage Sweater Mitts just aren’t warm enough when the wind blows.

This also seems like a really good time to use up the yarn from the frogged mystery socks. I’m totally guessing on the details of the yarn based on the pattern’s listing here; it’s a wonderful variegated green that Lorna’s Laces doesn’t seem to do anymore.

Well, after trying to follow A River Runs Through Mitt’s thumb gusset instructions, I’ve switched to the Cafe au Lait mitt instructions instead. I’ll be adding notes to the River Mitts page about my confusion, and hopefully get that sorted out (there were four stitch markers placed, but only two ever dealt with in the pattern?).

The Cafe Mitts’ is very easy, and I’m nearly done with it already. ^_^ But the wonderful bangle-style rolls for the Icy Hands pattern just aren’t turning out the way they do in the photos. Maybe after washing and blocking they will?

aha! Finally tracked down the correct yarn from The Socks That Walked Away! ^_^ It’s merino, which is much more exciting than regular wool. But even better I know how to take care of it and stuff. This has been a mystery for almost 10 years! ^_^

ugh the thumb is for bottom-up and the wubbles are top-down. Frogged, and starting on a pattern that’s been in the queue for a long time.

Well, when I don’t lose track of where I am in the pattern, this makes a great travel project! One down, one to go.

Modifications :

  • Starting at row 74 of the pattern, do another full rep of the chart.
  • Cast off on row 82. (After picking up the numbering for the Hand section.)
  • For the thumb, pick up the 16 stitches and make another three (total : 19 sts around).
  • k 8 rounds, p 2 rounds, k 1 round, k1p1 rib for 5 rounds.
  • Cast off thumb on row 6 of the ribbing.

(Actually, the thumb should be 20 stitches around because of the k1p1 ribbing.)

wooooo finally done! The knitting took an extra trip to Scotland with family friends when I left it in the rental car. At least they were headed back this way before flying home, so that I had it with me for /our/ drive up to Scotland the following week.

The second one (left) is definitely knitted tighter than the first, and I think I didn’t quite end up with the full 56 stitches around for the hand after making the thumb hole. Serves me right for being distracted by scenery instead of counting my stitches. -_^

Otherwise, though, this is a great pattern for travelling!
