My daughter requested new bear hats for the twins as they’ve outgrown their little preemie ones. We’ve ended up with three this time since the first one I made turned out to be a bit big - but with the boys it works out well to have hats in three sizes since as they grow out of the first two the larger twin can move into the largest hat and the smaller twin can inherit the middle sized hat. Made some little booties to go with them.

4/16/15 These boys are growing way too fast - I thought the hats would be too big, but they just fit!

Hats knit on size US 5 needles, ears on US 4.

Small Newborn (13” circ.):
c/o 64 stitches, knit to 3.75”, begin decreases with (K6, K2tog) around, with one knit round in between each decrease round. Tie off top when 8 stitches remain.

Ears knit with 11 stitches per needle as with the small preemie hat.

Newborn (13.5” circ.):
c/0 68 stitches, knit to 4”, one decrease set up round of (K15, K2tog)x4 around (4 stitches decreased), knit one round, then decrease starting with (K6, K2tog) around, with one knit round in between each decrease round. Tie off top when 8 stitches remain.

Ears knit with 12 stitches per needle as with the large preemie hat.

0-3 mos (14.5” circ.):
c/o 72 stitches, knit to 4.25”, begin decreases with (K7, K2tog) around, with one knit round in between each decrease round. Tie off top when 8 stitches remain.

Ears knit with 13 stitches per needle - bind off when there are 5 stitches on each needle.
