I honestly tried to do a vanishing loop cast-on on sock needles several times, but I kept losing a needle and I finally had to switch to magic loop just to keep the knitting in one piece.

The cat put this hat on pause for a month by finding it overnight and eating her way through the working yarn. Because it’s self-striping, removing the destroyed part of the yarn was going to make one of the stripes shorter! I left it resting for a while before I decided to just remove 1 whole pattern repeat from the skein in order to get enough of that color to finish the stripe. Fortunately the skein was a little longer than I needed and it all worked out fine.

The idea for this hat came from KatsukoKnits’s , which I loved, but I only decided to do it when I saw this perfect colorway. The Scheepjes is a lot nicer and softer to the touch than the Arwetta, so if it were me I’d probably put the stripes on the inside, but perhaps my dad will have less sensitive ears.

(The cat in question, Tristana, was under 13 months old at the time, so should perhaps be ‘the kitten’. Pictured 2nd from bottom, asleep under half the hat in lull between destroying things.)
