Notes

So mystified by Stephen West after seeing the shawl of three of my friends. Bought his book Bestknits, but want to knit his Marled Magic first. Will be a holiday project. Can’t wait!

Marled Magic Stephen West

August 9 started section 1, Mesh with Scheepjes Invicta colour …. and Scheepjes Mohair Rhythm colour 679
August 10, section 2, Seed stitch used lots of different merino and other sock yarns both new and old, some left-over bits from a friend too. (A big thank you to Esther W.) Started with light colours, faded to dark and back to lighter colours again. Finished on August 12.
Started section 3, Brioche, never done this stitch before but once you get the hang of it and watch Stephen on YouTube it’s really easy. I used Drops Fabel print colour 340 with Lang Mohair Luxe colour 240. It turned out really lush. Finished on August 13.
Section 4, Garter stitch, I made a wrong colour choice and found out after 5 cm; so ripped it out and started over with new yarn, Some Katia Olé socks Rainbow colour 51 from which I had removed all the purple, red, orange and yellow. I was left with blue-ish-green yarn. Second yarn was the Lang Mohair colour 240. Finished on August 14, 12.30
Section 5, Garter stitch, used left over yarn from my ‘Turquoise sea Jumper’ Juniper Moon Farm Moonshine Trios colour 108 Caribbean, held single as it was DK weight. Finished same day at 16.15
Section 6, another Seed stitch in which I used the same yarns as in section 2 only started dark with a lighter part in the middle fading to dark at the end again. Finished on August 16.
Section 7 I used Lang Mille Colori Socks & Lace Luxe colour 35 with colour 70 for the first 5 ridges. Then replaced colour 9686 with Drops Alpaca colour 2917 for the next 5 ridges. For the last ridges I used Alpaca colour 2919.
Section 8 I used the same Mille Colori for the first 4 ridges, then Alpaca colour 2917 for 4 ridges and the rest with Alpaca colour 2918. Because the Mille Colori colour 8657 has a long fading colour change the ridges on both sections look quite different.
Finished both section 7 and 8 on August 18.
I did all my loose ends, and my braid before I started the i-cord.
I could have started the i-cord bind off now, but I was not happy with the total depth. So I added a whole extra section at the top of the shawl, divided the section in two - not quite halves and used 2 colour combinations and while knitting changed yarns and wrapped around each other. Katia with Scheepjes Mohair colour 679, Mille Colori with Drops Alpaca colour 2918, used the ridges pattern from section 7/8 and did 5 ridges.
Then changed to the Juniper Moon and did 4 rows garter stitch. Then some leftover turquoise yarn with Katia Silk-Mohair colour 713, 4 rows garter st, and 4 rows with Juniper Moon.
Finished this extra section on August 20, and was very happy with the extra length it gave me.
Finally could start on the i-cord!
Used Mille Colori colour 35 with Lang Jawoll Magic colour 1502 and Katia Silk-Mohair colour 713 so 3 threads to go for the lush effect. One round to pick up the stitches created by the increases from my extra part, and then go i-cord ;-)
I finished the last stitch on August 21 at 20.30
Made two extra tassels when I came home from my hols, just to give that extra bit of wildness.
I have to say that have enjoyed this project enormously and I will definitely make another Marled Magic
Stephen West ….thank you so much!

Total weight of shawl: 632 gram.
