So I got the bright idea that I should make my own rug for my little family room that I recently renovated and grabbed a ton of yarn (last year?) with the intention of turning a blanket into a rug. I kept going back and forth about which pattern would work best and landed on Zendoodle. This pattern just looks like so much fun and also looks like a very sturdy stitch pattern and I think with worsted/aran held double it should be pretty nice.
I started by grabbing some markers and filling in a couple coloring pages, first just using my intuition and then again matching my colors as closely as I could to the original and using the designers pattern as a guide. I ended up liking mine better so I am going with that.

I am about halfway thru the second column of the pattern and loving it so far. Once you understand how the shapes are formed it is pretty easy going. The fabric I am getting is pretty stiff which is just what I wanted. It’s also pretty heavy so it will be a wrestling match between me and the rug when I get to the end!

Just finishing up the 7th column and have decided that I will need to add 3 or 4 more columns to get the size rug I am looking for in the parlor.
Currently the rug is about 6 feet wide and each strip is about 9 inches wide so I am thinking I will do 10 strips total and then remeasure. If I can end up with a 6’ by 8’ rectangle then I can add a border of about a foot along each side bringing it to 8’ by 10’. I am really hoping that will be large enough for that room and I can get the width I need without adding to each column of patchwork.
I’m really enjoying this beast of a project. It is pretty wild looking and I will admit at times I have reservations…“will I really LIKE this in my room?” I think my concerns are more about what other people will think though and I will be soldiering on!
yep, I decided to call it the parlor because it sounds over the top which I think is fitting for this room

OMG!!! I’ve finished the modular portion!!! I ended up doing 10 strips. I also didn’t stick faithfully to my original color plan. Once I could see the colors plating out I did a bit of switching up colors. For the additional strips I picked rows 1 and 4 and added them to the end working the shape pattern in the reverse order.
Now on to the border…when I started I wasn’t sure what I’d do for a border but now that this part is done I think I’m going to do a solid border and since I still have a lot of teal left I’ll be using that.

I love it!!! All of the crocheting is finished however I have additional plans…
- Weave in (most of) the ends on the wrong side
- Block it…I am thinking with steam and stretch? It is acrylic so we’ll see how that goes.
- Get a non-slip pad or maybe sew on a durable backing.
I really love the way it looks in both rooms so once all of that is done and I have some time and energy to put into styling I will choose it’s permanent home. I do think it will be the pink room which means I need to get some tables in there (and stuff on the wall and lighting…it is a work in progress) and maybe knit a couple large poofs for footstools!
