Grandsweetie #3 requested crocheted Airpod max covers from Etsy made with fur yarn. They are $39! The yarn is only $7 at Hobby Lobby and will most likely make two sets. Of course, I need to try to make them myself. Of course, there isn’t a pattern. Of course, I don’t have any Airpods myself to try them on. Do you think that’s going to stop me from trying?

Well, this has been quite the project. HL had the yarn when I went on the 11th and it was 30% off. I got it and the recommended hook.

I sat in the car and tried them out while I waited on DH at the doctor’s office. My first thougths were, “How in the world does anyone crochet with this stuff?” I tried and ripped a few sample rounds. I had looked at a pattern and other covers on Etsy and most people were crocheting them like granny squares. I soon realized that you have to feel for where the stitches go, since you sure can’t see them.

I kind of got the hang of actually making the stitches. When I got home I decided that I would need a bunch of stitch markers to mark the corners and rounds. I made one that seemed like it would be about right after lots of struggles with where I was.

Today I made a fit model from cardboard and tape. I tried on my first cover and it was pretty loose. Then I watched a couple of Youtube videos. Umm… why didn’t I do that to start? They were on using regular yarn, but had good ideas. The first one made a rectangle for the top and crocheted around the edge. Duh! That made it lots easier to keep up with where I was at. The second one showed clearly where the holes need to be and suggested using smaller hooks to draw in the bottom for a snug fit. I got the idea to use regular yarn.

I hope they fit the real Airpods as well as they do my cardboard mockup. I still need to weave in the ends and sew on a button, but I’m pretty pleased with them.

The second yarn I used is some mystery acrylic I found in my stash. It doesn’t have much twist if any. I think any matching worsted or Aran weight yarn would work.
