Afterthoughts

My sister brought me back a skein of this hand-spun, hand-dyed wool she bought in Spain, and I thought a cabled hat would work well with it. It is a pretty fuzzy/sticky wool with subtle rainbow colors; it’s about 11 WPI, so a heavy DK weight.

I found this elegant cable chart by Irina Dmitrieva which is pretty much what I had in mind for the yarn! Unfortunately the pattern is written for a small hat, with no size grading (which is really the most valuable part of a charted cable/color pattern to me).

The pattern does contain the note “For adult size use worsted weight yarn and needles 3.50mm US 4 and 4.50mm US 7”. But since I had already decided on my DK yarn, I tried to compromise by using a US5 needle for the body (and adding an extra round in the decrease chart), but the hat is still too short for my intended recipient. I think if I had done an extra inch of ribbing it would have been perfect.

Oh well, I still have 100g of the yarn left, so I think I will try another hat from the same collection.
