Pattern:

This fits my 23” head nicely. Hopefully it will fit my mother-in-law!

1. Using circular needles, sz US 15, cast on 48 stitches. Put marker ring on after all stitches are cast on.
2. Knit next 8 rows.
3. Purl 2 rows.
4. Wrapping yarn 2x around needle for each stitch, purl next row.
5. Next row: +dropping extra wrap for each stitch as you go, slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold to back, k3, k3 from cable needle. Repeat from + until loop is complete.
6. Wrapping yarn 2x around needle for each stitch, purl next row.
7. Next row: dropping extra wrap for each stitch as you go, k3, +slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold to front, k3, k3 from cable needle. Repeat from + until loop is complete.
8. Purl next 2 rows, making one stitch extra in each row as you go so that you end up with 50 stitches total after these 2 rows.
9. Knit 7 rows. If you desire a taller hat, this is a good place to knit extra rows until you obatin the depth you wish.
10. Knit next row, adding 4 markers evenly (in addition to the beginning marker) so that the stitches are divided evenly into 5 groups. You will have 1 marker every 10 stitches if you haven’t altered this pattern.
11. Continue knitting rows, knitting 2 stitches together before each marker until you have only 5 stitches left. If necessary, change to double pointed needles when the circular needles become too cumbersome.
12. With 5 stitches remaining, cut yarn with 8” to spare. Weave this remaining 8” through the 5 stitches and pull through center of stitches to inside of hat.
13. Weave tail through purl bumps on inside of hat.
