I’ve made a few mittens with scrap yarns and this is another pair.
I think that these are a really easy to follow mitten pattern, but they are maybe too simple for me; I think I like the Ann Budd pattern Basic Mittens better (but this pattern is free!).
I considered this yarn to be mainly DK weight and followed the third size (38sts) to make these.
I misread the gusset directions but continued on.
Maybe my yarn is a bit bulkier than DK, but these started to come out a bit large for me, so I think I’ll give them to a friend who has larger hands than I do. As such, I tried to make them a bit longer than I normally would and also made the thumb longer.
The main difference that I incorporated was to move the thumb gusset in towards the palm slightly by moving the decreases. I also made the back of the hand larger (21sts) at this point and the palm smaller (17sts). For a bit of a rounder top, I tried incorporating a few rounds of centred decreases in the last few rows.
For the gusset, I did use M1L and M1R around it. I would consider doing less thumb gusset increases and casting on a few more stitches to the part opposite the gusset for a more even thumb.
