fruityknitting made me do it! Really wanted to do something with my two skeins of Gilliatt, given that I am not in love with the wear of the yarn in stockinette, Brioche might do the trick (my Bregne is pilling like crazy, i still like the pullover and it keeps me warm, but it needs a close shave sigh).

Also, I work in a café with indoor & outdoor service, maybe a vest will help me navigate the changing temperatures better than a longsleeve sweater.

changes (some not intentional cough)

  • puk 96 sts for the arm-icords, 1 st in every row, so I probably fucked up the row count. how do you count uneven rows in brioche if you - like me - have trouble counting them out loud? i always lose track and i guess you can more or less count knit stitch loops, but I’m not sure I chose the right loop to count from. I prioritized making it even on both sides.
  • for the hem/neckband I puk 3 out of 4 stitches for the lower hem, 5 out of 7 sts in two steps 3 out of 4 then 2 out of 3, repeat from beginning, 9 out of 10 sts for section C, 1/1 and 1/1 for D and E on the back. I wouldn’t have met the intended stitchcount otherwise and had to try a couple different ratios. The final number is fine for the hem, but again, I wonder if I added/lost rows in the brioche part.I probably didn’t pick up the correct part of the stitch either, even though lilly kate kindly specifies that in the pattern. Again, I focused on doing this evenly and not stress too much :)
  • sewed around the buttonholes with my yarn held double to stabilize the hole and purl stitches above and below it. hope that helps with the tension these will be under
  • picked the brown, wooden buttons :)

I love the fit of the vest and how quickly it knit up. The lines are very flattering, too, and the instructions are mostly clear for my liking. (I’m a bit daft, occasionally, when it comes to things like “end with a WS” I need to scramble my brains to figure out whether that means end after having knit that row or not; also it took me a while to figure out that a RS/WS brioche row repeat counts as 2 rows… always thought that, very very technically speaking, these two rows complete each other as one).

De Rerum Natura’s Gilliatt is very stretchy and lofty and will keep my torso warm. I’m not sure that I would do a tubular bind off with this yarn again, it doesn’t look as even as it would with a more worsted-spun yarn because it does tend to stick to itself and tensioning the sewn part is tough when your yarn has this much stretch to it. Should the negative ease prove too much for my buttonband, I will sew it shut to keep the band even.

Overall a fantastic pattern for a one-color-brioche-first-timer like me. <3
