We’ve made these pants now at least 5 times for friends and relatives and each time we’ve used a slight variation on the rainbow stripes.
Sometimes we’ve had thick stripes, sometimes thin. One time we went through from pink to purple and then pink to purple again and another we went pink to purple and then purple to pink. One time we had black stripes in between the rainbow.
We used Heirloom Naturals for the top half. These were more absorbent.
I think they’ve been for 2 boys and 2 girls so far.
I do love them and the pattern is fantastic. The flare at the bottom, the phoney seam on the inside leg are fantasic. We stuck with the XO cable each time as it looked good. They are seamless, knit in the round and the shaping is fantastic.
One pair we’ve unraveled the legs and added another few inches so Luie can still wear them. On the 9th photo down you can see one leg with the extra added and the other leg the original length.
I have pictures of three different rainbow versions and a grey version made out of a cotton/bamboo blend with a different cable.
The rainbow pants were handwash only because of the Naturals at the top. Though Mandi did put hers through on a gentle cycle and they only felted very slightly and still looked great.
The Shepherd coloured stuff on the legs is machine washable so even after well over a years wear we could unravel it and re-knit with extra length.
The first pair of these pants was where I learned to weave in the ends to be basically invisible. And with rainbow stripes, that’s a lot of ends to weave in.
I’ve now become the default maker-upper and end weaver-in-er for Ruth’s knitting. I don’t mind as it’s something I can do. I’m not fast enough or good enough at counting to do most patterns but I am damn awesome at weaving in ends. I have more patience than Ruth for it and it means she can move on to the next thing. She loathes making up.
