Used the smaller needles for the double-knitting and the larger for the borders. Still pretty loose on the double-knit parts.
Made charts by printing out knitter’s graph paper and tracing enlargements of the emblems.
Knit cross pieces 16 stitches wide, 24 rows tall.
Chain-stitch cast-on for the bottom, slip the first stitch of each row.
Have 90 slipped stitches on the inside for the vertical borders.
To join:
On white-background side, with corresponding colour, slip-stitch around the double-knit square.
On the top and bottom edges, distribute 10 increases for a total of 114 stitches. Chain one stitch for the corners.
On the sides, slip-stitch into the three outside edges of the last column stitch, skip one. Repeat to end. Should end with 117 stitches. Skip or add more as necessary.
On the border pieces, with corresponding colours, slip-stitch into each stitch of the top and bottom edges (114), chain 1 at the corners, and slip-stitch 119 stitches. This should be possible by stitching the inside leg of every slipped stitch, and the outside leg of every 3rd stitch.
To join border to emblem pane, chain stitch around with corresponding colours, inserting crochet hook from the border in towards the centre of the pane.
On the other side, repeat instructions with cream yarn on the pane. I skipped the border set-up row to make it less raised on this side, and worked the increases at the same time as the joining stage.
Slip-stitch around. In my case I did an extra stitch every 3 stitches, but whatever your gauge requires.
