What does a knitter cast on for on a very warm June day? why, a woollen hat and mitts, obviously! Actually, I guess it’s the lure of having a small knit to hand, rather than a voluminous length of boiling hot fabric blanketing one’s lap. And it’s also the lure of this amazing skein of yarn from OMD which I couldn’t resist… the name alone is ultra-seductive!

I wanted a pattern for a beanie and mitts and picked on this one as I haven’t knitted it yet and I know how accomplished and brilliant rililie’s patterns are. So it’s a completely plain version of Green Memories, accentuating the wonderful speckly blue-green-rust mix of the OMD single.

Pattern: I’m knitting the hat exactly as the pattern states, just omitting the fair isle sections and the slightly larger needles to knit them. I’ve used the Knit Picks tubular cast-on, rather than the Ysolda one - just find it a bit easier to do.

NB: the 140/160 sts for the medium size fit fine on a 40cm circular.

Mitts: I have limited yarn left for these, so I’m going for much shortened mitts with thumbholes. I’ve used a tubular cast-on again, though I’ve cast off in rib (rather than tubular BO) as it’s too fiddly for me.
