I’ve wanted to make this hat for a long, long time. The hat appears in photos on pages 140 and 143 of Kaffe Fassett’s Family Album on the baby model who is also wearing the “Baby’s Flags Jumpsuit”. However, there is no pattern for the hat in the book. I sorta-kinda figured out how it was made, but never got to actually knitting it.

Recently, my second grandchild was on the way and I finally decided to make the hat. I did another online search for the pattern and found someone who had put the pattern on ebay in the UK several years ago. I contacted that person and she still had the pattern and was willing to sell it to me. It turns out that Rowan made a kit with the pattern and yarn to make both the Baby’s Flags Jumpsuit and the hat! She only had the pattern, but that was all I wanted. Done!

When I received the pattern in the mail, I realized after looking at it that it was made exactly as I had imagined it was from looking at the pictures. That confirmation really pleased me :-)

I chose the smallest size and used about 18 different colors of a Merino sport-weight (or DK for you UK knitters), mostly “Siena” from Wolle-Roedel, a chain store here in Germany.

It didn’t take long to knit up the hat at all. Josh was born about a week ago and of course the hat is too big for him, but I’m hoping he’ll get to wear it before the weather gets too warm. His big sister (she’s 4 years old) saw the hat and said she wanted one too, so I’m currently working on a bigger size for her.

The photos are of the smaller size. I’ve put it on a wig-dummy that is more of an adult-size, so you have to imagine what it would look like on a slightly smaller head ;-)
