Hacking the ribbon wrap pattern in super bulky yarn from my stash. Did have to buy one extra ball to get it done. Recreated the pattern just from photos of the ribbon wrap. Will write up notes on my steps after I finish.
Initial thoughts:
Start with a basic triangle shawl and when you reach a certain point, put one side on hold and do stripes on the other, then decrease down to a point. Pick up stitches along side of color stripes and then knit across held stitches to make long stripes in center. On first do 4 stripes then do 3 on the second and kitchener together. Pattern measurements: 20”x76” so aim for 14” down spine on initial triangle and 1.5” stripes which will make ~2” measured diagonally.
Final design:
Garter tab cast on for a total of 9 stitches.
Setup row: K2, pm, K2, pm, K1, pm, K2, pm, K2
R1: K2, kfb, k to 1 stitch before next marker, right leaning bar increase, K1, kfb, k to 1 stitch before last marker, right leaning bar increase, K2.
R2: K all
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 14” (I got tired and didn’t make it quite to 14”, for me this was 40 rows for a total of 89 sts)
Switch to first ribbon color and start a row 1, but don’t increase at the second marker and then also knit the middle stitch, taking out the two middle markers. Then place the other half of the stitches on hold. Knit back across with the ribbon color.
R1: K2, kfb, K to end
R2: K all
Repeat rows 1 and 2 4 times per stripe (8 total rows per stripe) for 5 stripes, which should be finishing the first stripe of the second ribbon color.
R1: K2, ssk, K to end
R2: K all
Repeat rows 1 and 2 4 times per stripe (8 total rows per stripe) for 2 stripes, which should be the last ribbon stripe. (For me, this was 57 sts to start the corner triangle)
R1: K2, ssk, K to 4 sts from end, K2tog, K2 (place a second marker 2 sts from end to help remember)
R2: K all
Repeat these two rows until only 3 sts remain between markers (7 total sts, for me 50 rows)
R1: K2, cdd, K2 (remove markers on this row)
R2: K all
R3: K1, cdd, K1
R4: K all
R5: cdd
Then pull the tail through the last loop to close off.
Now for the long stripes in the middle section.
Starting with the color for the last ribbon stripe, pick up and knit 1 stitch for every 2 rows along the straight edge. For me this was 28 stitches to pick up, plus picking up 1 from the middle spine stitch to even things out. Then knit across held 44 sts. 73 total stitches. But to keep the edges of the piece straight, need to pick up a little differently.
Pick up and Knit 2 stitches, put needle through next pick up point, then the next, then pull yarn through both at the same time, to mimic a ssk, the pick up and knit normally to held stitches (should have a total of 28 on needle after picking up from spine stitch) then knit to 3 stitches from the end, right leaning bar increase, K2 (there should still be a marker before the last 2, if not, add one). Then knit back across.
R1: K2, ssk, K to 1 st before marker, right leaning bar increase, K2
R2: K all
Follow rows 1 and 2 4 times per stripe (8 total rows per stripe) for 4 stripes on the first piece and 3 on the second.
Once the fourth middle stripe is reached, put these stitches on hold and follow the same instructions for a second piece switching the two main ribbon colors for the second. Then kitchener the two pieces together.
