13 Feb 2013: New to me, darling used Baynes wheel (and five bobbins) arrived from SpinningBunny via FedEx this morning, after being stalled for a few days in Ithaca, NY, during the big NorthEast snowstorm. Currently still apart and getting acclimated to the humidity of it’s new location. Pic 14.

19 Feb 2013: I have been contemplating decorating this little wheel. This time around (see my other decorated baby) I lack inspiration and I reaaaaly want to spin! Hmm, the wheel is in excellent condition and really doesn’t need much work. It’s being lightly sanded with a 350 grit sanding sponge and then I’m using Formby’s Tung oil prep (see next to last pic., #13). Should be back together in the next few days.

21 Feb 2013: Assembly going well. I am stuck on how best to get the “circlip” off the crankshaft and where the leather washer should be located in regards to it. Just emailed for some help. Was no problem, the circlip pries off easily and is put back on with thumb and forefinger and can be squeezed together to fit, if need be. Leather washer is placed closest to the wheel, then the upright rod that goes from the crankshaft to the treadle is slid on (pic 4), lastly the circlip is placed (pic 3).

22 Feb 2013: Problems getting the bobbins to spin. Oiling the metal flier shaft, leaving off the brake (for the time being) and lots of treadling seem to have helped. Finally I put on a leader, started using fiber and the bobbins started to spin. After the oil spread around a bit more I was able to add in the brake, very lightly, with no tension on it, and the bobbins continued to spin. Each of the bobbins needed this same attention.

The entire wheel had felt a bit stiff, probably from not being used and sitting around. Oiled all the necessary bits and kept treadling. The wheel was quite clean when it arrived, and is finally working away very happily.

25 Feb 2013: The upright rod that goes next to the on-board Kate needs to be placed over the tip of the metal rod (holds a bobbin) at the top of the kate. This rod has a groove in the tip (pic 11). The curve in the metal top of the upright faces towards the spinner (pic 12) and needs to be moved so it fits over the end of the rod and into the groove (pic 13).

I think we can say all is now well. :D

28 Feb 2013 - I’ve been spinning everyday on a (discount) bump of Corriedale fiber. I’m about half way through. I’ve plied about a quarter of it. I thought it would be a great way to let the wheel settle in and gain some spinning experience on it before moving on to more expensive fiber. So far the wheel still benefits from oil on the bobbin bar, and also on each side of the front bar that holds the treadle.
