Notes

I like this pattern a lot, as it’s non-fussy but has a little decoration with the eyelet rows. I also appreciate the look of the M1 increases along the middle, since I prefer a less pronounced ‘spine’ on a triangular shawl.

I re-wrote the procedure to account for my preferred Portuguese tension, with purls dominant.

Modifications:

Purl garter edges on RS, purl all sts on WS.

Eyelet rows:
Purl 1 row on RS.
yo, p2tog on WS.
Purl 1 row on RS.

Shown blocked, and in progress with the second skein well under way. That’s a 40 inch cord on my circular Denise needles.

After looking at various projects, I decided I would like a little more bling on the edge. I’ve done a lot of picot edges in crochet, but not yet in knitting. Since I didn’t know yet how to knit a picot, I started goofing around with crochet-like chains done with the knitting needles: bind off a stitch, then YO, pass the stitch over, YO, pso, etc. Then anchor the chain by knitting into and binding off the next stitch.

For me, this method seems lighter and quicker than the knitted cast-on, bind off method for picots. Obviously it gives itself to endless variations such as knitting into the central stitch for a crochet-like picot or varying the number of chains. I have some interesting swatches now!

As knitted, the edge goes: BO 1, (YO, pso 3 times, BO 3,) repeat. BO only one or two between chains to ease around the point.

Really good pattern for showing off the color runs in a handspun, obviously! I came to the end of the original skein and immediately sat down to card and spin another skein just to be able to keep going. I was enjoying the knitting so much! The cashmere content in my custom blend (about 30 percent) gives the yarn a wonderful lightness and drape, while the merino keeps it sproingy.
