The crown. This is row 7, the knit/rest row before the increase from 24 stitches to 32. As the hat grows, the mitre join becomes more noticeable. Right now it looks almost chaotic. It's about here that I have historically given up on many hat attempts due to missing a kfab, or dropping a stitch.

Yep.. it's the fiddly bit. I like to use a traveling loop arrangement, and it frees me up to use an ultra long cable. Here I'm using Knitpro short tips, and a 1m line.

53½cm I approximate 96 stitches = quadrants of 24

Kfab is knit front and back to make a stitch.

Round1: Cast on 4 and join the round.
Round2: Kfab all 4 stitches (8st)
Round3: Knit all stitches (8st)
Round4: Kfab all stitches (16st)
Round5: Knit all stitches (16st)

Treating as 4 quadrants (4 quadrants of 4 stitches each)
kfab first and last stitches of each quadrant on increase rounds, and knit a rest round after each increase round, thus:

Round6: kfab, knit 2, kfab / kfab, knit 2, kfab /
kfab, knit 2, kfab / kfab, knit 2 kfab
(6 stitches per quadrant, 24 stitches)
Round 7: knit all stitches (24 stitches)
Round 8: kfab, knit 4, kfab × 4 (to increase to 8 stitches per quadrant, 32 stitches)
Round 9: knit all stitches (32 stitches)

Each increase round number corresponds to the number of stitches per quadrant.

Knit to round 24 (96st total). (for a brim of ~54cm)
note: I measured at this point and was elated to find it measured 53½cm

Knit length (to nape /brow)
Change to single rib and knit to preferred length

I decided to bind off with a needle a size up for a stretchier finish (5mm).

I crocheted a school logo on the front in chain stitch.
