Notes

Wanted to use something machine washable and pest-problem-free in light of the chaos that seeps into my house at the slightest provocation. Found that the mercerized cotton I settled on was least expensive from the UK, which was unexpected.

I fiddled around with the Blue Seas color scheme for this pattern in Adobe Illustrator, because… I am a ginormous design nerd?

First, I made a palette of swatches from the colors of yarn I got for my pillow-making project. I found a photo of all the colorways for Catona, from which to eyedroppered these colors, so they’re not perfect but they’re reasonable facsimiles for the purpose at hand.

Deep Ocean Green is the background color I intent to use for at least 4 Aviary pillows. They’re going on a rust-colored couch in a room with a deep-ocean-green-ish tree-of-life carpet. I got more accent colors than I’m going to use on this pillow, which I hope to use in others, but I think the common background color and some common accents will pull them all together.

I made the palette of all the different colors of Catona I got and then selected all squares with each of the original Blue Seas colors and tried my different Catona colorways in their place. My color scheme ended up using a yellow-green color for two areas that were different colors in Blue Seas, so there’s one less swatch in my legend at the bottom. I’m also working toward 16” pillows and I just took the borders and such out to simplify envisioning the final product.

I may break down and copy the chart 4 times and rotate it into the … oh, heck, now I kind of have to do that, to get an idea of what the whole thing will look like.

Still, though, I think this process is replicable for anyone else out there who has Adobe Illustrator, and possibly even with photoshop or GIMP or suchlike. And it was kind of fun and will, I hope, save me from mistakes in translation I’d probably make if I hadn’t done this.
