Materials: Ruffle yarn –sample uses Red Heart Boutique Sashay Sparkle, small amount of matching color fingering weight yarn. I have used crochet thread.
Size: Approximately 3.5” wide and 69” long
Machine: Any
There are many ways to knit this and many yarns you can use. This is my preferred method and it can be done on any machine. You are hand manipulating and hand feeding the yarn. If you don’t have a garter bar, you can simply knit each row without turning. If using the mid gauge or bulky or Bond machines, use Every Needle. On the standard gauge machine, use EON. I use my standard as I don’t have a garter bar for my Bond yet.
1) On a standard gauge machine bring forward needles L8-0-7R
2) Push back EON to A position 8 needles in WP
3) Skip the first 4 “holes” in the “yarn” and starting w/5th “hole” hang from left to right across the needles.
4) Weight the “yarn” with clips and push back behind the latches. You can move them as needed, but once you have some length the scarf will be heavy enough.
5) Fold over the tail and hang the skipped “holes” onto the first left needles and push behind the latches.
6) Unfold the “yarn” from the skein and hang the next “holes” onto the needles. If you can hold the hung “holes” down with your left hand as you hang them. If you can’t knit each “hole” and bring the needle back to HP with the new stitch behind the latch to keep it from popping off.
7) If you can hold the “holes” in the hooks with your left hand, use your needle selector or a ruler to push back on the needle butts to knit the “holes” through. Use the needle selector to bring all the needles forward to HP. Bond users use your green or yellow card.
8) Take your garter bar with the ridge side up. Place it on the needles with the latches open. Slide the sts off onto the garter bar. Turn the garter bar and rehang the sts. Repeat from Step 6 until nearly out of yarn.
9) When you have less than 8 loops, hang them on the hooks (sts will be doubled) and knit a row with matching yarn.
10) Back Stitch Bind Off or knit a loose row and latch tool bind off. Knot ends securely and clip to about an inch. The ruffles will fall over and the ends won’t be seen so no need to attempt to weave them in!
