This is a great free pattern, very clear and carefully charted to minimize the jog. It is also an excellent stash busting project.
I will definitely make another one, but using different colors and without ear flaps.

Bits and pieces from my stash, all aran weight, not worsted.
I cords and ribbing using 4 mm needles.
Body (both stockinette and colorwork) on 4.5 mm.
No checkerboard rows, to shorten a bit the crown.
I made size S using a thicker yarn and I am happy with the result.
For a good fit, a hat should generally have between 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) of negative ease. After blocking and drying my FO, the 52 cm circumference is a great fit for a man’s head circumference of 60 cm (20.5 inches) (last pic).
