These will be my first-ever toe-up socks. I used Suzanne Bryan’s directions for a Turkish cast on and found it really straightforward to get going.
I knit a size slightly small for my feet (I’m a UK6), so used a slightly larger needle than recommended by the pattern. However, the pattern is very stretchy, and I think the smaller size on 2.25mm (possibly even smaller) needles would have resulted in a better fit.
I found working out where the gusset should start and end quite challenging. But browsing through all the finished projects helped to gauge where the gusset should/could end. Links to guidance photos in my notes also helped.

Gusset calculation
10 rows / 2.5cm counted
26/10 = 2.6”
2.6 inches = 6.5cm
If N is the number of rows per 1” then 26(30)/N = X. If L is the required length of foot in inches then starting point of the gusset is G = L - X. (SM16 Questions: Post 105)
Negative ease…
For the best fit, a sock for an adult should measure about 10 percent—practically speaking, that corresponds to about 1” (2.5 cm)—smaller than the actual leg or foot circumference, and about 1/2” (1.3 cm) shorter than the actual foot length. (Interweave article)
I’ve decided to not include negative ease, because I’m assuming it is factored into the pattern.
Total foot measurement: 9.75” = 24 cm (Sock knitters handbook measurements for Size 6 (UK))
G = L - X
G = 9.75 - 2.6
G = 7.15” = 18cm
Heel
The 26 rounds are for the gusset, not the heel. You are at the beginning of the sole side. There is no need to pick up anything at this point, all your stitches are still on the needle. You work the first row of the heel chart for your size. You turn and work back over the WS of those heel stitches, using row 2 of the chart. You turn and work row 3 of the chart, thus working your way a bit further into the sole stitches. You go on like this, the angle between the heel stitches and the sole stitches becoming more visible with every row and your heel slowly forming above the sole. (SM16 Questions: Post 79).
Vertical leg
Setup: In short, what is meant is: All around pick up your stitches through two strands of yarn. Nothing more, nothing less. (SM16 Questions: Post 132)
Horizontal band
- Row 1 of the band starts on the wrong side (SM16 Questions: Post 125)
- How to insert the floss, with photo (SM16 Questions: Post 157)
- Extra explanation for the pattern section that begins “As you work row 12”: Insert the floss as if it was a lifeline. For the cable bits, rearrange the stitches on the left hand needle ready to knit cable, but run the floss through these stitches before you knit them.
- More floss help (SM16 Questions: Post 159)
Explanation for Row 1 of band chart:
It means when you’re knitting into the loops from your previous row, you have both yarn and floss loops. Knit them together as one stitch. You are no longer carrying the floss with the yarn on this row, just knitting into it from the previous row. (SM16 Questions: Post 138)
ERRATA
- Toe instructions: “Work Rows 5 and 6 seven (eight) more times (eight (nine) times total).”
- Gusset calculation instructions: page 3. ….“to get the number of inches/(blocks of 2.5 cm) to allow for the gusset.
Photo Requirements
Be sure your photos are in focus!
- A photo showing your socks on adult feet or on blockers/faux feet.
- A front view of both socks laying flat. This may need to be on blockers or pinned to a board so that the sock lays flat. See post 3 below for reference.
- A back view of both socks laying flat, folded at the purl bump row so that the heel is visible. This may need to be on blockers or pinned to a board so that the sock lays flat. See post 3 below for reference.
- A side view of both socks laying flat and facing the same direction, and with the counting thread visible on both socks. This may need to be pinned on a board so that the socks lay flat. See post 3 below for reference.
- A counting thread must be used in both socks, starting with the instep chart. The thread should be placed in the first or last purl column of the instep and should be flipped every six rows. The thread must be in the same place on both socks.
