Notes

My first attempt at sock madness. I’m using my project page to keep track of potentially tricky sections that other knitters stumble across, plus information for the SM16 competition. On completion, the socks fit perfectly. I’m not in love with the yarn though: I like the ‘rustic’ feel of it, but it’s very splitty and randomly tufty.

Qualified, 15 March blush

  1. Knitting alternating colour helical stripes
  2. Cabling without a cable needle
  3. Engekristall questions post from SM forum

socks Tricky bits to watch out for: socks

  • Slipped purl stitches (e.g. round 7)
  • Chart legend and written abbreviations differ. All slipped stitches must be slipped purlwise, unless specifically stated otherwise
  • Crossing cables where both stitches are ktbl (round 8)
  • For magic loop knitters - note that flap is knit over 32 stitches. (Odds are your stitches will be divided 33 on back and 33 on front needle - Size M).
  • Extra row of CC in heel flap
  • Size M: do not knit the stitches in the brackets
  • Gusset: Size M has one extra purl stitch (not charted) at the very beginning of the round. Size L has at the end too.
  • Gusset set-up row: knit up one side of heel flap stitches in alternating colours, and the other in a single colour (this moves the MC to the correct starting spot)
  • Charts B1 and B2 include the extra purl; Chart A doesn’t
  • Last row of foot, before the toe section, is a knit row.

socks Leg section: socks

I did three repeats of the pattern instead of required SM two repeats. Eventually started making decent progress after I started using life-lines every few rows. Makes a huge difference.

I struggled a bit with uneven tension down the sides. Something to work on in the next pair.

socks Heel section: socks

The heel flap was a little long for me, so I frogged and knit them again using a fractionally smaller needle (2.25mm).

~~~~SM16: ENGELKRISTALL REQUIREMENTS AND INFORMATION ~~~~
socks Errata socks
Foot section:
“Continue working established pattern on instep and take care to add a round with slipped stitches on the sole in CC as in gusset round 2 every 4th round.”
So the slipped stitches should be on the complete sole until you finished chart B and cut your CC.
Toe section:
So the slipped stitches should be on the complete sole until you finished chart B and cut your CC.
Toe: If you need more length between the End of Chart B1/B2 and the toe, you may knit plain stockinette rounds in MC only (so not striped).
socks Photo Requirements socks
  • (See Questions thread, post 3 for the exact photo requirements)
