It took me a while to get going with the chart, for two reasons. First, Knit Companion cut the brackets off the chart, so I was baffled by the text directions referring to a bracket. Second, I’m not used to the bracket approach to marking out a repeat section in the chart, so kept accidentally including stitches in the repeat that I shouldn’t have.

So, step by step, for each row, the following needs to be done.

1. Knit one edge stitch, which is always garter stitch.
2. Knit all the stitches from there up until the end of the bracket.
3. Repeat all the stitches the required number of times within the bracket.
4. Knit the stitches on the chart after the end of the bracket once the last repeat is complete.
5. Knit one edge stitch, which is always garter stitch, to finish the row.
