Notes

I wanted some warm socks to wear during the next baseball post season and I wanted an opportunity to try out the ladderback jacquard technique, so a pair of Phillies socks were conceived!

My first attempt became a swatch when I realized that I needed to rotate the chart to account for going cuff-down. I found from the swatch that I also needed to cast on a few more stitches to more easily move over the heel.

Construction notes:

  • Long tail cast on with size 2 needles
  • Switch to size 1 needles.
  • 15 rows of ribbing
  • Placed ladderback stitches every 4 stitches or so

I’ll likely add some design to the foot, but we’ll see

Sock 1 complete! Overall, I’m happy with the result. I wanted a mostly red body, but I still wanted the extra layer of fabric, so I did add a simple chart to the bottom of the foot.

Things I like:

  • The “P” came out well
  • I can actually fit the sock over my heel, which has been a problem with past colorwork socks

Things I’ll see if I can approve on second sock:

  • Foot circumference a tad tight. I’ll probably add just a few stitches to make space for the extra layer of fabric
  • The holes on the gusset pickup and start of ladderback

The ladderback ended up being a lot easier than I expected. I’m glad that I gave this technique a try. Onto sock #2!

Finished sock #2
Small changes that helped:

  • Twisted the lifted increase to start the ladder and twisted the second stitch for ssk when finishing a ladder
  • Kept ladder going even on the three rounds that were red only
  • 64 stitches for foot instead of 60
