Needed a simple project on the needles while home for the holidays. Decided to knit a pair of socks for my husband.
I’m doing a pair of toe-up socks. Started with a Judy’s magic cast-on. Cast on 14 stitches per needle (28 total). Each round, I did an twisted yarn over increase at beginning of end of each needle (4 inc per round). Increases placed after 2 stitches from beginning of needle and 2 stitches from end of needle
After 5 increase rounds (48 stitches), did increases every other round until 34 stitches per needle (68 stitches total, 15 rounds from beginning). Then knit 10 rounds plain in toe yarn. Then switched to yarn for foot.

After switching to the yarn for the foot, I knit 50 rounds in stockinette. After that, I started the gusset increases.
For the increases, I had stitch markers at the beginning of round and after half of the stitches (34 st). Every other row, I would do 2 twisted yarn over increases. One stitch after the BOR marker, I would do a yarn over, wrapping clockwise. One stitch before the halfway marker, I would yarn over, wrapping counterclockwise. On the following around, I would twist the yarn over when knitting into it.
I did this for 40 rows, for 40 increases total (108 stitches total, 34 on one side, 74 on the other). I knit one extra round, so 91 rounds total in the foot color.
I then slipped 16 stitches. I knit 42 stitches in the heel color. This left 16 stitches on either side of the heel before/after the stitch markers.
I then knit 18 rows of short rows, knitting to the stitch before the mds.
After the short rows, knit across, resolving the mds. On the last mds, knit it together with a gusset stitch. Turn work. Slip first stitch, purl across and resolve the mds. On the last mds, purl together with the gusset stitch.
Continue knitting back and forth. On the last knit stitch, ssk the stitch with a gusset stitch. On the last purl stitch, purl together with a gusset stitch. Always slip the first stitch of each row.
Do this until all of the gusset stitches have been joined. There should be 76 stitches on the needles. Then knit using the yarn for the foot.
Knit one round, then knit in 2x2 rib for 64 rounds. On round 33, increase by 2 stitches. On round 64, increase by 2 stitches. Knit 1 round, no purling.

…well, hit a snag. I intended to switch to a smaller needle for the cuff, but I forgot to pack it. I got to the last round in the blue and realized this, so I put the stitches on scrap yarn and will start the second sock tomorrow…

I cast on the second sock on the 24th, but didn’t get as much knitting done during the second half of the week. I’ve now knit up to the heel on the second sock.

I finished one sock. For the cuff, I knit 17 rounds of 1x1 ribbing and finished with an Italian tubular bind off.
I originally did the setup rounds of double knitting, but the bind off was too tight. It seemed to be caused by the slipped stitches, so I undid the bind off and the setup rounds. Now cuff is stretchy enough to get on and off. Time to finish the other cuff!
