Asked to make replacements for a pair which had, through much use and love, holes in the soles. Having never contemplated knitted slippers before I was delighted to find a pattern which was clearly pretty much identical, and traditional to boot (or slipper). The only difference seemed to be a slipped-stitch edging to the sides and elastic threaded round the top.
Mods made (on the first one):
- started with 7 rather than 11 sts for the sole section, increased 1 st either end on 2nd and 4th rows in order to have a slightly shaped heel;
- slipped-stitch edging (first stitch of every row slipped purlwise);
- used 4 dpns to knit the toe section in the round which required a slight rejigging of the rib;
- continued with garter stitch on the sole on the assumption that it might be more comfortable to walk on.
Used 185g of yarn.
Using this yarn double, which I already know to be sufficiently abrasive to make my fingers bleed, was like knitting with strips of doormat. Fortunately previous experience tells me a day in the bath with some hair conditioner works wonders so I’m hoping the end results will be less like cardboard and will snuggle flexibly around the ankle after elastication rather than corrugate like an old tin roof.
31 Jan - they’re soaking overnight.
Audiobook - A Dying Light in Corduba by Lindsey Davis, eighth in the Marcus Didius Falco series. Much better narrator than the previous six I’ve listened to, although still not as good as Christian Rodska who read the first. Enjoying the development of the characters and the astonishing details of the olive oil trade of the time.
