80” x 19” post easy blocking, 56g/780 yards laceweight, 20 increase teeth, 16 central teeth, 20 decrease teeth.
LOVE!!!! So easy to run blocking wires through the lace line at the top. So light and airy, delicate and also simple. Will make another soon for a friend who was blown away by the wip.
Thanks to Dave for modelling.
When I saw the Hap for Harriet I had a sense of déja vu, and why not? it’s a widely used traditional lace edging dating back at least to the Victorians. There’s little new under the sun or in the knitting world.
It (the edging) is also used the Margaret Dashwood Shawl but in different proportions and with slightly different details. So I’m taking some leftover lace-weight from the stash and reverse-engineer haping.
There’s about 62g of the yarn left over from my whisper cardigan which should be enough for a decent shawl. I’m working on the premise of 18g for increases, 24g for straight section, 18g for decreases (30%, 40%, 30%) thus using 60g of yarn with a 2g margin for error.
29 June On the current progress 15 teeth should take me to 12” depth (unblocked) - but no idea how much yarn that will use. Box and cox.
Starting right-side rows with s1, yo, k2tog. Increasing in the body using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s reverse yo. All decreases k2tog. I find ssk extremely fiddly.
3 July Increases - 17 teeth.
8 July - Ok. I got to 14 central teeth and still had 30g of yarn left. So I (gasp!) frogged the whole thing and am starting again. Will have a s1, k1, yo, k2tog border. And will increase to at least 18 - 20 teeth. At least that’s the plan. (The action knitting picture is pre-frogging and taken at the top of the tower of Mechelen Cathedral, Belgium.)
13 July - 20 increase teeth with 7 central teeth done and still not at 50% of the yarn (I have balance kitchen scales so my yarn weighing ventures are… approximate) which means at least 14 central teeth in total. Which sounds good to me.
20 July - finished, with 6g of yarn left over (according to my new accurate scales). 20 increase, 16 middle, 20 decrease. Unblocked size 50” x 16” at widest points (127 x 40.6 cm). Blocked, not particularly hard, to 80” x 20” (203 x 51 cm).
