Notes

Note: The chart for the thumb is wrong, and is not corrected in the errata available for the book. Following the logic of the pattern for the hand and inspecting the picture of the finished mitten it is clear four lines of the pattern repeat have been chopped off from the bottom of the chart.

Oh dear. Another entry from the vault of shame. Promised R a pair of glittens for a significant birthday - back in April 2013. The pair I started were, frankly, both itchy and horrid. But instead of going back to the drawing board I stuffed them into a corner and tried to forget about them.

Much research has produced a pattern I like which will easily combine with instructions to convert to glittens using up some of the yarn from the blanket that never was. Blue and gold for the fairisle, green for the internal “fingers”. Hurrah!

Ten rows of glove insert before starting fingers.

  • index 17 sts (8+8+1) 11 rounds;
  • middle 16 sts (1+7+1+7) 12 rounds;
  • ring 14 sts (1+6+1+6) 11 rounds;
  • little 13 sts (1+6+6) 9rounds.

Made first mitten on 3.25mm needles. It fits my small female hand just fine but will be impossibly tiny for Richard. So making mittens two on 4mm needles.

Goodness me, what a difference thee quarters of a millimeter makes. Also colour dominance. First, small, mitten was knitted with gold dominant. Second, bucket-like, mitten with blue dominant. Bucket-sized mitten is 11” long and 10” in circumference. Small mitten is 10” long and 8.5” in circumference. The question now, since I’ve frogged bucket mitt (running out of yarn) - should the next attempt be 3.5mm or 3.75mm?

It’s 3.75mm. And the insert, on the same needles, is DK rather than worsted.
