Modifications:
I had a few challenges: I’m not use to knitting “shaped”/structured clothing, I don’t enjoy sewing seams so I wanted to knit this as one piece; I wanted to use a bit finer yarn than the patterned called for; and ended up making it much larger than the pattern. I’ve already sent the vest out so I can’t verify exactly what I did since I sort of winged it here and there, but below is the general idea:)

a note about the yarn - it washes up to be so soft. I’ve not knit with acrylic much at all but I was so pleasantly surprised by it softness - my son wants me to knit him a vest same pattern same yarn, just a different color:)

Yarn - pattern calls for bulky wt yarn on 6.5 mm needles I chose bernat satin, an easy to care for acrylic, medium #4 wt , on the recommended 5 mm needles
- because of the finer yarn/smaller needles I needed to tweak the pattern (which I didn’t do quite right; if I were to do this again i would increase the repeats to 17: that would 4 cables repeats for each side and 9 across the back).

Final Size: 54 inch around.

  • Cable Pattern is 16 st repeat + 14 sts x 4rows
  • I repeated the 16 st pattern 13 times to get the correct width for worsted wt on 5mm needles, ( if I knit this again I would change this to 17 repeats)
  • Added 60st total (30 st on each end) for an overlapping front & collar edging made-up of a parallel running garter rib st
  • I ended up short so I knit the ribbed front band. I meant to knit it in the garter rib pattern but forgot and ended up doing a standard 2x2 rib - 24 rows gave me enough for a 2 ½” overlap.

what i did:
- CO 180st which is increased to 206 on the 5th row
(i should have included sts for the rib edging but didn’t think of it until after i knit the 1st 4 rows - so i should have/ could have added 54 st (90% of 60st) then, on the increase row/5th row, increased to 30 st on each end)

  • On row 5 i added 30st on each end so the bottom edge has a small notch which is kind of a nice detail, breaking up the bottom edge.
  • Row 5 onward: i worked 30st in garter rib st (produced 8 vertical ribs on the rs); k1; worked the 16 st, cable/garter st pattern repeat, 12 times; knit 12 st in pattern; k1, worked 30st in garter rib st (produces 8 vertical ribs on the rs)
  • I used lots of pm to make it easy to keep track of both rs & ws pattern
  • Once done i picked up st around the front and neck and knit 2x2 rib for 24 rows.
  • I wanted a bit more length so I added a 4” garter rib band around the bottom
