Notes

Note: See the Update, a few paragraphs down.

I’ve knit more than 50 projects now, including hats, blankets, gloves, mittens, and socks, but I hadn’t knit a scarf, and lots of people start with scarves. I felt like I’d missed out on this tradition, so I wanted to circle back and knit my first scarf. I wanted it simple, like a first scarf might be, though not just boring stockinette or garter.

Looking up simple scarves, I found this blog post by the Yarn Harlot, which I thought might look good in the corespun single Scarfie I picked up from Walmart (with in-store credit from a return). I also liked this project, which was knit in Scarfie, though it didn’t say how much they used. I ended up going with the former, because I wanted a mindless knit, and it was the same 4 stitches over and over, forever, where the latter one required following a chart, at least for a while, until memorized, or readable from the knitting itself.

I decided to make it a little larger than in the blog post, and went with 34 stitches for the cast on. I went with a German twisted cast on. I didn’t bind off for a day, because I was examining the GTCO and trying to work out a true GTBO. I got something interesting, and very stretchy, and it looks a bit like the GTCO, but I’m not entirely convinced I mimicked it perfectly. I did come to a real understanding of the CO, though, and now I get why they call it “twisted.”

Update! I originally finished the 5’, 1 skein scarf in the wee hours of April 3rd, after an all-day, start-to-finish knitting marathon. I picked it up again on April 20th, picked out the woven in end, picked out the bind off, picked up the stitches, and knit another whole skein onto the end, doubling its length. I went at a more leisurely pace, but still knit through most of 2 days, finishing the extension.
