going to make some spooky halloween cards
Sample 1 (Purple/Yellow Snowflake)
28 epi
monochrome section:
19 units wide, 12 units tall
6 cm wide x 4.5 cm tall
polychrome section
19 units wide, 12 units tall
6 cm wide x 5.5cm tall
ideal squares:
6 cm / 19 units = 3.1666 units / cm
12 / 3.1666 = 3.79 cm tall
so even with the single color polychrome I’m not quite square. definitely going to go down to sewing thread and see how that goes.
Sample 2 (Pink/Purple Heart)
tabby weft: size 40 sewing thread (black)
27 units wide, 27 units tall
8.5cm x 11cm
still a little too tall, even with sewing thread. I think the pattern wefts are just too thick to square at this sett, so I need to change wefts or change the sett.
Sample 3 (Orange Heart / Black Birds)
Resleyed at 24 epi, and it looks so much better. easier to weave too.
27 units wide, 44 units tall
after washing: 10.2 cm x 18.5 cm. almost square. close enough.
if I was going for exact squares, it would be 16-17cm tall but I don’t need it to be perfect.
Sample 4 (red and black clocks)
24 epi, jaggerspun merino in red and black (leftovers from that scarf I made earlier)
27 units wide, 39 units tall
after washing: 10.5cm wide, 14.5cm tall
perfect squares would be 15.1 cm tall, so the wool is just a smidge squished compared to the cotton, which makes sense.
I love how soft this is but I feel like it’s not drapey enough. I’m going to be brave and knock the sett down another notch just to see what happens.
Sample 5 (Red and Black Sun Symbol)
going down to 20 epi to see if I can square with 8/2 cotton
27 units wide, 27 units tall
12.3 cm wide x 12.7 cm tall
The hand isn’t drapey like I hoped, but it is soft and flexible. loads of stretch along the bias. Probably would make nice outerwear if I had a wider loom but since I only have a little one, maybe I’ll make a cowl.
the gamp
so I had a crazy idea - instead of using all 4 pattern picks to make an X for each row, what if I only used half of them? normally the sequence goes 2+red, 2+black, tabby A, 1+red, 1+black, tabby B, 1+red, 1+black, tabby A, 2+red, 2+black, tabby B
but if we split red and black into R1 (only weaves pattern in a 1+red pick), R2, R12 (standard polychrome S&W) & B1, B2, B12 we get a lot more options. that’s what’s in the gamp.
the shafts are split up into mostly-even chunks that correspond to B0, B1, B2, and B12 (left to right, and then it reverses in the middle). the rows are R0, R1, R2, R12 from the bottom up.
the corners have the standard textures - R0B0 is background, R12B0 is solid red, R0B12 is solid black, and R12B12 is the opposite of the background, but in between there’s a lot of interesting new textures to play with!
