Review: Brenda’s detailed patterns, and the extra calculations she provides, make it possible to maximize the usage of a special skein of yarn. This is a great design for new and experienced knitters alike.
The majority of the design is worked in “Section 1” of the pattern, and this section is charted as well as written out. The other sections (setup, eyelet border, and finishing) are only written (not charted).
The various testers explored this pattern with a variety of yarns, so it’s valuable to check these projects!
See photos for comparison of standard BO and Icelandic BO for the lace edging. I opted for the Icelandic BO, as it seemed to accentuate the garter lace edging (and it was easier for my hands).
Repeats for this project:
Among the same weights, yarns can actually vary widely. Per the pattern, Brenda’s fingering weight yarn provided 4.37 yds per gram. My fingering weight yarn provided 3.6364 yds per gram. This is important to know because, assuming we’re working to a similar gauge (i.e., similar yardage worked per row), I will need more grams overall for the same yardage.
For example, in Repeats 14 - 18 of Section 1, I calculated that I was using approximately 15% more yarn for each additional repeat. When I finished R18, I had 25g remaining (90.9 yds), and since R18 used 10g, I estimated 11.5g would be needed for R19 which would leave only 13.5g for Sections 2, 3, and BO. Brenda estimated needing 12 grams of her yarn for those sections, which would be 52.44 yards. However, for my yarn, 52.44 yards would be 14.42 grams. Granted, Brenda was working more stitches at that point (completed through R20 rather than my R18), but calculating conservatively, I was concerned that if I worked a R19, I might not have sufficient yarn for the remaining sections.
Therefore, I stopped Section 1 after completing Repeat 18.
In Section 2, with the multiple rows of YO, the 12-row repeat used less yardage than the 12-row repeat in Section 1 (see below). So, I was able to work two repeats of Section 2 Eyelet Border, and I really liked how this larger section highlighted the asymmetry of this pattern!
Yarn:
This Yummy 2-ply is plumper/heavier yarn than what the designer used. In order to get the fabric drape I was aiming for, I blocked more aggressively. An alternate approach could be to size up for the needle.
Gauge:
- Before blocking: 22 sts & 44 rows over garter stitch
- After aggressive wet blocking: 17 sts & 40 rows over garter stitch
Yardage:
- Started with 115g (3.6364 yds per g).
- CO with US 5. Setup used 2g (7.3 yds)
- Section 1 (completed 18 repeats) used 88g (320 yds)
- Section 2 (completed 2 repeats to a count of 126 sts in garter section, plus 5 lace mesh, plus 12 lace edge) used 7g for first repeat and 9g for second repeat, for a total of 16g (58.2 yds)
- Section 3 used 2g (7.3 yds) ending with 145 sts
- BO with US 6 per the pattern. Used 1g (3.6 yds).
