Notes

Changes to CO and start:

  • Use US 6 / 4mm and cast on 4 sts firmly with cable CO
  • WS: knit 4
  • RS: k2, m1L, slip 2 with yarn in front (wyif). (5 sts)
  • WS: Change to US 7 / 4.50 mm and k2, yo, k3
  • RS: k2, (kfbf substitute, see below MODS), drop yo and slip 2 wyif. (7 sts)
  • WS: k2, yo, k5
  • Continue with Row 3 of first repeat of Section 1 keeping above pattern of 2 I-cord selvage sts along neckline and yo/drop beside it.
  • Note that with this extra st in the I-cord at the neckline, the total sts per row will be one more than the pattern row counts.

Other MODS:

  • kfbf is worked as (ktbl, yo, k front leg as normal) all in one stitch. On the next WS row, work the prior yo and prior ktbl as ktbl (to untwist). This is a much kinder set of motions for my arthritic hands.
  • In Section 3, just before starting CC on RS, work one st in MC and slip p-wise back onto left needle (eliminates the blip). And weave in ends per Patty Lyons.
  • In Section 3 for CCs only on WS in CC, start as: k2 then slip both sts p-wise back onto left needle, then work the row. (Tip: work to the existing DS and then turn for the short row.)
  • To end: After working final CC stripe (rows 25 & 26), work in MC for Rows 27, 28 (omit the yo after the initial K2), & 29 (start with SSK and work next two sts firmly, knit across without double increase, slip last 2 sts wyif), finishing after completing RS row. To BO: on WS, K3 then pass first 2 sts over third and off; then work Jeny’s surprisingly stretch BO (working last 2 sts as k2tog).

Gauge

  • Before wet blocking: measuring garter in MC: 22 sts and 44 rows for 4 inches / 10 cm.
  • After wet blocking (NOT aggressively, no pins, just patted into place; I’d worked on larger needles because the recipient wouldn’t be able to continue blocking through the years) and drying: measuring garter in MC: 22 sts and 36 rows for 4 inches / 10 cm.

FO dimensions: 80 inch wingspan and 20 inch depth.
