Notes

I like the look of half-herringbone double crochet so I used it for the body of the bag instead of double crochets.

Dash under symbols = work into back loop

Half-herringbone Double Crochet:
YO and insert hook into next stitch, YO and draw through stitch and first loop on hook, YO and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook.

Invisible Half-herringbone Double Crochet Decrease
YO and insert hook into first stitch, YO and draw through stitch and first loop on hook, + insert hook into second stitch, YO and draw through stitch and first loop on hook, YO and draw through remaining loops on hook.
Note: + You do not do a yarn over before entering the second stitch to be decreased.

Chain 2 at beginning of each row counts as a stitch (ch 3 for dc) Skip the first stitch of each row and work into the 4th “v” from hook (5th “v” for dc).

Work last stitch of each row into the top of the turning chain from previous row - make sure to pick up both legs of the chain to avoid a hole. I use a small hook to get into the pesky thing:). If you look at the chart you will see that the last stitch of a row doesn’t have the dash underneath. This also applies to Section B where the last stitch is just a dc and not a front or back post dc.

I started the body with 34 chain and did the first hhdc into the 4th chain from the hook.
If using dc do 35 chains and do the first stitch into the 5th chain from hook.

There are a total of 44 rows in Section A:
10 increase rows
24 straight rows without increasing
10 decrease rows

Here are the clearest photos I could find of the charts. You may have to scroll down to find them. Right click and save the files so you can print and enlarge them.

Japanese symbols are charted using universal symbols so all the symbols are presented from the RS. This is a very simple pattern. You must keep in mind that stitches worked on the WS must be worked so that they appear accordingly on the right side.
Think knitting: stocking stitch is knit and purl but the chart presents showing the knit symbols with the “key” telling you to purl on the wrong side.

Don’t be put off because it is only the top section of the bag where this comes into play. It’s easy to see the back and front post symbols for the dc’s but where you have to keep this in mind is when you crochet along the side section in single crochet so that you achieve that lovely sideways “V” between the two sections. I’ve written the beginning of section B out below.

Section B
Body ends on a wrong side row so you will have to re-attach yarn:

First Row: With right side facing, join yarn, pick up and single crochet 41 stitches evenly along side of 44 rows, turn.

Next Row: Chain 1, skip last picked up stitch, front post single crochet across, sc into last stitch, ch 3, turn.
++ I changed to black yarn on this row.

Follow chart for front and back post double crochet rib section. I changed to a 5mm hook for this section.

Handles
I changed to a 4.5mm hook for this section.

Single crochet invisible join in the round - for handles:

Note: I re-joined yarn and did a row of slip stitches along the foundation chain and sewed in the ends. As I single crocheted around the foundation row for the handles I did back post single crochet into these slip stitches and also the corresponding stitches of the last body row on the other side of the bag. This hid the colour change to black yarn.

Lining
I used iron on interfacing on all lining pieces.
I cut a paper template of the rib section and added stiffening as well as interfacing and then machine sewed to the ditch formed by the last row of crab stitch. I hand stitched the remainder of the lining to the bag.
I purchased 5mm clear plastic tubing and sewed the handle around it for structure and strength.
Make sure to measure from foundation chain to final row of body for the width of lining material. I was short and had to add a piece of fabric as I measured the bag laying flat (as you do for the Fat Bottom Bag) but this bag is extra deep and requires more fabric.
