So, I saw a Ravelry ad, clicked on it, and the next day I bought the pattern and started knitting. (I have to admit, between seeing the pattern and buying it, I searched Ravelry high and low for a free pattern in a similar style.)
I’m very glad I bought it. Not only did I get a pattern for an oh-so-pretty item, I also found out the author writes novels about Iceland … intriguing!!
But back to Understory. My problem with the pattern is a well-known one in my universe: I didn’t get gauge. But it wasn’t totally off, and so I went with it. Only thing now is that the upper-mitt is not fitting over an under-mitt, just my bare hand. But I accept that, because I have for some time wanted to construct thrummed mittens with a fingerless mitt inside, and so now “upper is the new under”.
They work perfectly on their own, as you can see - highly recommended for a hot chocolate in the garden in January!
About the yarn
There’s not much to say. I like it. It’s very thick, but well-spun, so little to no splitting. It’s soft and forms a dense fabric with good stitch definition while fluffing up nicely after washing. The colour DID bleed though, resulting in -1 star for the yarn rating.
About the pattern itself
I had no trouble following it. Makes good use of markers and has common sense instructions like “knit until you have x stitches after marker” which makes row counting and memorizing unneccessary. I liked that.
I had trouble with the gauge, my mitt turning out smaller even though I used heavier yarn and chose the largest size, but that’s unfortunately normal for me when I knit in the round (because I’m a combined knitter? I don’t know). So I’m not blaming the pattern.
About the finished item
It’s great! And I finished the pair in two evenings - talking about instant gratification!
The design and construction is very cool, and the fit is good.
Where you see uneven stitches in the photos, that’s where I messed up sewing in the ends. And I cut one live stitch and had to darn the thing before it was even finished… Anyway, very happy.
