Had the perfect colors…except that they happened to be worsted weight. So, I decided to do 3.5 repeats of the chart (well, more like, 3 repeats, and then 15 stitches into a 4th, which isn’t precisely half, but incorporates 2 of the 4 flames). I originally tried to control the amount of roll at the bottom by doing one row of 1x1 rib after the first 3 rows of stockinette. That wasn’t enough to keep it from rolling too far, however, so after completing the hat, I went back and picked up stitches along the bottom and did several rows (lost count) of 2x2 ribbing.

I’m not super happy with the way the hat turned out, but that all has to do with my inexperience with intarsia. I thought I was keeping the strands nice and loose between color shifts, but it wasn’t loose enough, so the hat is not at all stretchy and some of the color sections bump up. If I yank really hard, I can cram it onto my adult-sized head though, so I think it will fit on a 5 year old with a largish head just fine.
