After two years of knitting, I have buckets of leftover yarn scraps. I’ve decided to crochet a granny square blanket using just the scraps in my stash.

I’m interested to see how this goes - I have a hodge podge of yarns in different fibers, weights, colors, and lengths. Wool, cotton, acrylic, and blends. Mostly worsted weight, some bulky and lots of fingering. In cool and warm color palettes. As short as 12 inches and as long as half a skein. It’s all going in! No yarn left behind! The end result may be an atrocious technicolor nightmare, but I don’t care. It will be made with love.

I’m planning an overall blanket pattern using three different sizes of squares - small, medium, and large.

On a side note, crochet is not my forte (yet) and I estimate that there will be a f#ckton of ends to weave in. This could take a while.

May 25, 2015: I believe I’ve finally finished all the squares. I’ve been working on it off-and-on while I move across the country. I modified the pattern a bit, using more medium squares and fewer small squares than the pattern calls for. I used this method for weaving in the ends as I went along.

Also, I noticed that 3/6/12 rounds for the S/M/L squares weren’t giving me uniform sizes. Possibly due to the varying yarn weights, or more likely from tension issues. Nevertheless, I easily evened them out by adding 1 row to each medium square, and two rounds to each large square. Now they’re perfect, even without blocking.

Small = 3 rounds
Medium = 7 rounds
Large = 14 rounds

Next step: Joining them all together. I’ll probably buy some black yarn for this final step, to tie it all together nicely. I just need to decide how I want to join them. And I’ll probably wait until I’m moved into my new place. This project is a little cumbersome in a hotel room!

EDIT: I like this project so much that I’ve decided to make this blanket bigger. This one is on hold until I acquire more scraps.

June 26, 2016: Done! I framed each square with black yarn using sc then mattress stitched them altogether. Then, I gave it a dc border. Looks great!

June 2019: 3 years later. After much use and a couple washes, I discovered that middles of a couple squares were beginning to come unraveled (all in places with slippery acrylic yarn). I looked up some videos on how to repair granny square blankets, and settled on this one. Easy fix and I’m so happy to put this blanket back into commission!
