i started my first evenstar just over a year ago, and it keeps coming up in my memories on socials and making me nostalgic. so here i am taking another whack at it, hoping to show that i’ve learned from the mistakes i made last year!!

this shawl slept for a LONG time but i’m back at it just in time to curse myself for starting chart 3 again

realized that 3 skeins of my yarn wouldn’t be enough, and unfortunately kp has discontinued the color!!! so after the band of stockinette rounds after the increase to 560 stitches, i joined my tidepool heather green yarn. they look really nice together!! i’ll have to weigh the blue yarn i have left, to see if i can get away with knitting the applied border in that color - it would be great to give this old gal a more cohesive look

i’ve also simplified the ribbing in chart 3 (rounds 1 - 24). they made me absolutely miserable the last time i made this shawl, and all the maneuvering to do the twisted decreases stressed my hands something awful. so i’m just doing regular, non-twisted decreases and 6 rounds in i honestly don’t see a difference!
ROUND 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21
p1, k, yossk x2, k1p1x4, k1, k2togyo x2, k1
ALL EVEN ROUNDS
p1, k6, rib x7, k6
ROUND 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23
p1, yossk x2, yo, k2tog, p1k1 x3, p1, ssk, yok2tog x2, yo (double yo to purl next stitch in round)

simplifying the decreases was the best decision i ever made, i’m CRUISING through these repeats

switched to second ball of tidepool heather on round 43 of chart 3

eliminating the twists from the ribbed portion of chart 3 was awesome - the last time i made this shawl, it took me a MONTH to knit those ~47 rounds (due both to the strain on my hands, and how my spirit was simply unwilling), and this time i knocked it out in 2 weeks, phew

i was soooo sure of myself the last time i made an evenstar, when i scoffed at other people saying that the border took them as long as the whole rest of the shawl, when it only accounts for ~25% of the stitches, and that’s because i didn’t do any BEADING!!!
it’s such a striking effect, and it’s absolutely worth it, but boy is it time consuming!

at the time i wrote that last note, i had completed 5 of the 52 repeats of the border…. and today i did number 6. beading is TOUGH, and it really made me not want to pick up my work! i need to find a comfortable solution for holding-and-stabbing beads or this baby is never gonna be finished

shawl slept again for about 4 months! i was keeping my beads in an egg cup, and holding the egg cup between my boobs for ease of access, but it only worked when i was wearing a specific pajama top, so i simply never worked on it due to the inconvenience lmao. finally figured out a better way (putting multiple beads on the crochet hook at a time, learning how to hold the crochet hook with my working needle, keeping the egg cup in my yarn bowl) and now i’m doing about 2 repeats of the lace chart a day! should be able to knock this out before the end of the month

had to change to another ball of border yarn TWO REPEATS before the end
