A wedding present for my dear friend Sonia, who is going on honeymoon to Egypt.

The bamboo is cool, soft and has a light shimmer. It’s a gorgeous blend. The variegated yarn gives it oomph. I could start on how the shades of deep blue, rust brown and emerald green echo the sand of the desert and the waters of the Nile, but they just went well with the silver when I bought the main colour, specified by the intended recipient! :o)

I made the head deep so that it would sit well on her head and not want to fly away with the desert wind (and because I like the 20s look), and then decreased just before the brim, giving it a slightly bell-like shape. Then I worked a row with eyelets to thread a satin tie, just in case it’s a tad lose on her head and she wants to give it a tug. If she prefers not to have the tie, the eyelets are practically invisible.

I stopped increasing at Row 25 of the original pattern and changed the brim completely, increasing every 3rd stitch and then working even, making double instead of single crochets, and finishing with crab stitch. This was all thought and executed on the go, and with a considerable aprehension about whether or not it would work. As it turned out, I think it does, but you tell me :o)

AN UPDATE:
It got to her just before she had to make her way to the airport, so the hat went to Egypt with her! I’m so glad! I thinks she was too. Hurrah!
