Just another little hat.
It’s cold. I left my hat and earmuffs in England. I needed something to cover my ears. It had to be quick, but it also had to be cute. I spent valuable hours looking for a pattern, and in the end I decided to do my own thing.
I bought this yarn at Fyberspates.com a while ago but I hadn’t figured out what to do with it yet. For this project it has worked well. It’s softer than it appears, and the colours are deep and gorgeous. I’m making a cowl with the remainder. It’s not too warm, that’s all.
Here’s what I did: This yarn is a light (but fluffly) DK, so I doubled it and got a very perfectly standard gauge of 18 sts for 10 cms (didn’t bother with the rows.)
CO 100 stitches on 16” circular needle but do not join. Work 6 cms in garter.
BO first 10 sts of next row and join in the round with first live stitch, leaving little flap loose. Work in stockinette stitch for 10 more cms (that is, 16 cms from CO edge.)
Beg dec: Place marker, k8, ssl, rep to end.
Next r: k7, ssl. Rep to end.
Cont in this manner, changing to DPN when necessary, until there’s…. (nutz, I didn’t count them!) erm, something like 10 stitches (a few up or a few down) on needles. Cut yarn leaving a long tail (18 inches or so) and with a blunt yarn sewing needle thread tail through live stitches several times, pulling tight. Weave in ends.
NOW, fix loose flap to brim by sewing with yarn or sewing on the buttons of your choice.
Wear it proudly and, should you make one for yourself, write me with any mistakes or modifications and send me a pic!
