Notes

When the guild for which I volunteer time offered a contribution toward yarn purchased at Hazel Knits, I jumped right in. My handmade socks seem to be wearing out all at the same time so I’m focused on replenishing them before the next winter sets in - no more darning! This pattern looks intriguing in construction so I’ll give it a go, veering away from my several standard favorites. The gauge makes me a bit nervous so my plan is to knit far enough to check the fit before the heel turning. Usually I cast on ~64 sts and use a 2.75mm needle. After working a small swatch, I do prefer the hand of the smaller needle. From reading notes & comments, it seems the larger size will be best for my women size 9 foot. Likely I’ll have to shorten the leg portion from my preferred 8” to make sure I don’t run out of yarn on sock #2.

Sock 1 done 3/20/20 It’s too heavy to wear with anything but boots. And, per weight, insufficient yarn remains for sock 2. Options:

  1. Frog back & shorten the leg
  2. Use yarn of a similar colorway for the ribbing & toe of sock 2.
  3. Work woman size on larger 2.75 needle & see if it fits over my foot without stretching so much that the fabric is distorted.

After realizing that I don’t like the weight/drape of sock 1, I’m going for option 3. If it is acceptable after a few inches of the leg, I’ll frog sock 1. It’s all knitting, right?

Modifications:

  • Carried the slip stitch through the entire heel ending when dec were done
  • Added 1” of slip stitch to the ball of the foot where my socks fail
  • Stopped on Rd 15, knit 1 rd, worked Kitchener on remaining 12 sts to avoid a bunch at the end of my toe.

Sock 3 completed with yarn to spare (after frogging sock 1). I’m much happier with the feel of the smaller size worked with larger needle. These socks hug my feet in the most wonderful fashion.

Second pair started 3/18/2025 Ends woven in 5/31/25
