Notes

One of my former street dogs is a bit of a cold frog so I thought I‘d make him a little coat to try and see if he‘ll accept my heartwearming attempt <3

In case he‘ll rip it to pieces I used only leftovers and obviously skipped the stranded pattern.

Other modifications:

My stitch gauge was about 1,5 times that of the pattern, which I found was just about right for my dog‘s size. However, I also had to add to the number of rows for it to fit.

  • 5 extra rows before leghole

  • when I had cast off 2 x 8sts for the legholes I knit 11 rows on the 24 sts part and 13 on the 40 sts part

  • I had to do the armholes three times before they were big enough and in the end I cast on 2 x 10 stitches, using backward loop + yo as I found the knitted CO left them too tight in the „leg pits“.

  • I added one row between the cast off rows and only worked them on knit rows.

  • I knit in the round as much as possible - and would never have chosen to knit color work flat. If I were to make this design again, I would probably make the back shaping with short rows instead of casting off and picking up for the ribbing.

  • For the cast-off of the leghole ribbing I used this super stretchy one, and with hindsight I wish I had remembered to use it also for the leghole cast-off. However for the coat itself I used the „standard“ cast off - where the first of two knit stiches is pulled over the second - since I wanted to avoid the edge standing up.

My coat is shorter than the original design, but as this was a trial I didn‘t bother with using also some of the red Alaska yarn in my stash for the ribbing - and possibly an added roll neck - so this is probably more of a heart warmer than a coat 8)

Last but not least though, I think it‘s still a bit fidgety to get the front paws through the legholes so if the experiment goes well and I decide to knit a bigger coat, I‘ll probably go for one with buttons - and certainly so if it were for any dog with stiff or aching joints.
