Great pattern. Well written. Go make your little ones some warm hats. I love that this covers the ears. Really keeps them warm on a windy day. Garter is super stretchy so may fit for more than a season, if it doesn’t get lost. Ha ha.
The Yarn
Really lovely yarn to knit. So soft as it slides through the fingers and the knitted fabric is super soft as to be expected. I don’t think this is a yarn you can experiment with and frog repeatedly. It will felt to itself. Hand washed and left to dry laying flat (with a fan to speed things up) brought it back to its original size. No problem there as long as you don’t stretch it out during washing/blocking. I would save this yarn for a hat for an adult, if I hadn’t been in a hurry to get started and had the time to shop or order yarn. Sometimes the best yarn is the yarn you have, right?

Bought this yarn in store literally years ago just to try it, not knowing what I wanted to knit with it, maybe I planned a hat for hubby. Then I thought about making myself some mittens with it. Well that never happened. So it seems just the right color that I had envisioned in my mind for a hat for Benny. So I figured, why not use it. It’s just sitting around. I know it’s kinda high end for a 4 year old’s hat, but I think better to use up yarn I have than go searching for something else. So far I love this yarn to knit with. Soft, has nice bounce, but not too stretchy so as to have no body.
Knit thru the ear flaps and joined in the round in first sitting.

Ugh! Dropped a stitch and it went down several rows. I am unable to rescue it! I tried and the yarn is just felting to itself. Have to rip it back to fix it. So frustrated.
Decide not to rip it back. Was afraid it would felt to itself more. So I peeled the felted stitches apart and managed to fix it. It’s not the prettiest, but it’s fixed. Looks felty in that spot now, but it’s in the lower back so not obvious. I guess eventually, the entire hat will look that way and be extra warm.

Received this text, “He loves his hat! He was mad at me taking it off on the subway”
Unexpected, but I’ll take it!
