For my first ever jumper I wanted to make a seamless top down raglan. I’m not a fan of seaming and I wanted to be able to decide how long I want the jumper as I go, instead of being forced to decide on the length before I start. But of all the raglan patterns I found, the one I liked best was the bottom-up Duchess. I really like the detail at the raglan edge. So…. I turned the pattern around. I’ll try to put it online after I see how mine turns out.
I used a double strand of my yarn and got to a gauge of 13.5 sts x 20 row = 4” on 5.5mm needles. The fabric is probably a bit looser than intended, but I like it.
Because of my slightly higher gauge and because I didn’t want the jumper to turn out as tight as in the picture, I decided to make a size L instead of M.
I altered the neckline and yoke a little because in my first attempt the neckline didn’t turn out as wide as wanted it.
I cast on 94 instead of 78 stitches and increased EOR 10 times and then every 3rd row 3 times to get the stitch count required at the bottom of the yoke.
27/7/10 - the yarn turns out to be quite itchy even trying on the half-finished piece with a long sleeve shirt underneath is itchy. I thought I had grown out of my hypersensitivity to itchy yarns, but it seems it’s not so. Sigh. Let’s hope I can wear it anyway, it seems to fit quite well…
4/9/10 - I made “a bit” longer because I wanted it to be a tunic length jumper, but it turned out as a dress. I increased a few more stitches and used fisherman’s rib at the bottom and at the sleeve cuffs.
I like it, I’ve worn it already although it’s a bit warm for Sydney’s end of winter. It’s not as itchy as I thought. Last night I wore it to a bar/club and ended up taking off everything I was wearing underneath because it was so warm. And it still wasn’t too itchy.
It’s strange yarn though, I wouldn’t buy it again. It sheds fibres like nothing else and pills quite a bit.
