COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS FOR KNITTING IN ONE PIECE.
Wanted to knit this in one piece with as little seaming as possible, I read a lot of others modifications and several blogs but still had to do a lot of work to figure out how to do this. Here is how I did it, written to be as easily understood as possible for anyone else that had a hard time make the conversion like I did.
Note: for cleaner edges I always slip the first stitch when starting a new row. I did not mention that in the below instructions.
BODY
For size small.
Cast on 145 stitches using tubular cast on method. (38 for each panel and 69 for back panel, this factors in the subtraction of 1 stitch from each side panel and 2 stitches from back panel for the selvedge stitches that would have otherwise been used up if seamed.). Knit in K1-P1 for 3 inches.
Increased row, per pattern instructions (read for your size, some sizes do not increase at this point) increase 1 stitch for each panel and 1 stitch for back panel. Count stitch now 148 stitches. Set up 39 stitches - place marker - 70 stitches - place marker - 39 stitches.
When knitting on the right side you will be knitting the right panel first, then back, then left panel. On the wrong side it will be left panel first, then back, the right. Be careful at first not to mix these up, as you get things established after a few inches and can see the pattern this will become easier.
Right side: (right panel) K2-K1TBL-EAROFCORN-K1TBL-SEEDWISHBONE-K1TBL-CORN-K1TBL-K5 (back panel starts) K6-K1TBL-RIGHTCROSS-K1TBL-K3-KITBL-TRELLIS-K1TBL-K3-K1TBL-LCC-K1TBL-6 (left panel starts) K5-K1TBL-EAROFCORN-K1TBL-SEEDWISHBONE-K1TBL-EAROFCORN-K1TBL-K2
Wrong side: (left panel) P2-P1TBL-EAROFCORN-P1TBL-SEEDWISHBONE-P1TBL-EAROFCORN-P1TBL-P5 (back panel) P6-P1TBL-LEFTCROSS-P1TBL-P3-P1TBL-TRELLIS-P1TBL-P3-P1TBL-RIGHTCROSS-P1TBL-P6 (right panel) P5-P1TBL-EAROFCORN-P1TBL-SEEDWISHBONE-P1TBL-EAROFCORN-P1TBL-P2
Continue this until 18 inches long as pattern recommends, BUT remember to do the decreases! The are done a total of 3 times. Final stitch count after all decreases should be 36-64-36.
SLEEVE
At this point I started the sleeve, you can knit in the round on either DPN or magic loop. I cast on 32 stitches using tubular cast on (count for pattern is 34 stitches, but remember we are taking away 2 stitches that would have been used up if seamed). 32 stitches - K1-P1 in the round until 3 inches.
Odd rows of wishbone pattern for sleeve are fine, but even rows have to be changed since we won’t be having a “purl” or wrong side row, modifications as follows:
- P2-CABLE8-P2
- P2-K2-(P1-K1)X3-P2
- P2-(K1-P1)X3-K2-P2
- P2-K2-(P1-K1)X3-P2
- P2-(K1-P1)X3-K2-P2
- P2-K2-(P1-K1)X3-P2
- P2-K1-P1-K3-P1-K2-P2
- P2-K2-P1-K3-P1-K1-P2
So sleeve will be worked K9-K1TBL-WISHBONE-K1TBL-K9
Increased worked as followed: K1-M1L-Knit to K1TBL-WISHBONE-K1TBL-Knit until 1 stitch left-M1R-K1. Increases will be done a total of 4 times for a total end count of 40 stitches. I got 11 repeats of the wishbone pattern when I hit the 18 inch length the pattern calls for, this could change based on your gauge though.
Next you need to set up to attach the sleeves to the rest of the sweater. Do this by either binding off or keeping 4 stitches live depending on your grafting method for underarms. I did the Kitchener stitch so for this I took two stitches from the beginning and the end of the sleeve and kept them live on a scrap piece of yarn. Total of 4 stitches taken off sleeve, so remaining 36 will be added to the body of sweater. When ever you are done knitting the sleeve and are to cut the yarn, leave a very long tail that you can use for grafting at the end.
JOINING BODY AND SLEEVES
This is the set up for attaching everything: right panel-sleeve-back panel -sleeve-left panel. You will be putting everything together on a long circular needle, I think mine was 40 inches. This part is tricky, awkward, and confusing, but it works! Here we go:
Row 1. Knit right panel in pattern until you have 2 stitches left, bind off or leave the 2 stitches live on a scrap yarn (place marker) knit the 36 stitches from one of the sleeves, remembering to do the wishbone pattern, (place marker) you are now at the back panel, bind off or remove 2 stitches, knit in back panel pattern until you reach the last 2 stitches, again bind off or remove and keep live these last 2 stitches, (place marker) now knit the 36 stitches from the other sleeve, (place marker) you are now at the left panel, bind off or remove the first 2 stitches, work in front panel pattern to end.
Stitch count: 34 front each front panel, 36 for each sleeve, and 60 for back panel, under each arm there should be stitches that are either bound off or kept live, 4 on top from sleeve and 4 on bottom from the body, these will be grafted later. Make sure you have 4 markers in place, these are necessary later for decreasing. Each marker should be where each panel edge meets a sleeve edge.
Row 2: Knit according to pattern for wrong side. For the sleeves you will now follow regular pattern directions for the wishbone as we are now knitting right side and wrong side instead of into the round.
Rows 3,4,5 and 6: Knit in pattern for each panel according to instructions, you will be knitting even with no decreases for these rows.
Now we will start the raglan decreases. Decreases will always occur on right side of sweater, never on the wrong side.
RAGLAN DECREASE ROWS
Row 1. Knit in right panel pattern to last 3 stitches before 1st marker-SSK-K1-SLIP MARKER-K1-K2TOG-knit in sleeve pattern until last 3 stitches before 2nd marker-SSK-K1-SLIP MARKER-K1-K2TOG-knit in back panel pattern until 3 stitches before 3rd marker-SSK-K1-SLIP MARKER-K1-K2TOG-knit in sleeve pattern until 3 stitches before 4th marker-SSK-K1-SLIP MARKER-K1-K2TOG-knit in left front panel pattern to end.
Row 2, 3, and 4; Knit in pattern evenly, no decreases, slip all markers. Stitch count: 33-34-58-34-33
Repeat these 4 rows 1 more time. (For size small, check for your size to see how many times to repeat) Stitch count: 32-32-56-32-32
Now you will be doing every other row as a raglan decrease row.
Row 1: Right side panel instructions with decreases before and every marker, see above “Raglan decrease row”.
Row 2: Knit even with no decreases per instructions for wrong side row.
Repeat row 1 a total of 14 times each, and row 2 13 times. final stitches count should be 18-4-28-4-18.
COLLAR
Replace the 6 stitches that remain of the wishbone pattern with the following pattern:
Left front panel. Right side: K4-P2 Wrong side: K2-P4
Right front panel. Right side: P2-K4 Wrong side:P4-K2
Assuming you just finished a right side row, we will now be working on the wrong side, starting with the left front panel: P2-P1TBL-EAROF CORN-P1TBL-K2-P4. Take these 18 stitches and thread a piece of scrap yarn through them to keep them live, removed from needle. Bind of remaining stitches until you get to the last 18 stitches of the pattern on the right front panel. 36 stitches bound off. Work the remaining 18 stitches from the right front panel in pattern with above mentioned modifications to wishbone until 3.25 inches long, keep stitches live, hold with scrap yarn.
Pick up the 18 live stitches from the left front panel and work in pattern until also 3.25 inches long. Joint the two panels using preferred method, I used 3 needle bind off.
Attach the collar piece to the 36 bound off stitches, again I used 3 needle bind off.
GRAFTING SLEEVES
I grafted the underarms using Kitchener method, I picked up 1 stitch from each side to help with the gaps, so each needle should have 6 stitches, you can always pick up more stitches as necessary to close gaps.
FINISHED! Weave in the all ends.
I wrote this to the best of my abilities, I apologize if parts don’t make sense or there are errors.
