Notes

Note to self: Remember that double increases add TWO stitches, not one. Then you won’t end up ripping out and restarting a fairly easy project six times because your stitch count is “wrong” (#6 is when my brain finally clued in that I was following the pattern correctly every time but that same brain is also an idiot that can’t stitch math correctly)

Bound off the main portion of the shawl when I completed a pattern repeat and could see that the colour change to the last dark grey stripe, which is much wider than the rest, was about to begin in the next row. Used the Lace Bind Off on pages 168-169 of Leslie Ann Bestor’s “Cast on, bind off”.

Stripes and edges look all ripply in the blocking photo (shawl turned out to be too large for where I’d planned to block it so ended up in makeshift location) but figured, based on previous experience with this yarn, that this would be a non-issue. Was correct about that: picked up the shawl when it was dry, gave it a little shake and all the stripes and edges went back into smooth alignment.

Note: be VERY careful when slipping the first stitch in each row; sometimes the patterning in the previous row will make it pull around the needle as if one is knitting (so-called-by-English-speakers) German short rows and it’s dangerously easy to slip the wrong loop. This isn’t a flaw in the pattern, which is beautifully written and very clear in its instructions. It’s just the nature of brioche knitting to sometimes be evil when it comes to edge stitches. I’ve taken to checking the side facing away from me once I’m a few stitches into each row just to make sure I haven’t messed up (because of COURSE the stitch slipping error only becomes visible when you turn your knitting)
