In mathematics, the Fibonacci sequence is a sequence of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers. The sequence usually starts with the numbers 0 and 1:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144,…

This scarf depicts two interwoven Fibonacci sequences, one black and one multi-coloured, starting from opposite ends of the scarf. Because the scarf has finite length, we use the sub-sequence 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 for both of our sequences. (Where you can think of the first term 0 as occurring just before the first crocheted row of the scarf, and just after the last.)

Pattern Notes:

  • Chain 27 stitches for 26 stitch-wide scarf.
  • Crochet each row using double-crochet stitches (English).
  • 2 rows of double-crochet = 1 integer.
  • Alternate the ith term of the coloured sequence with the (11-i)th term of the black sequence (for i=1…10).

Purpose:
The scarf was made to be a removable, reusable form of yarn bombing for Maths Craft events. It is whip-stitched to poles and banisters when needed.
