A really lovely pattern and a completely enjoyable knit! The pattern is easily memorized and the repeating pattern makes easy(ish) to spot mistakes (I still recommend using life-lines though). The yarn is beautiful and soft, and yet has great stitch definition.

Pattern: The Sierpinski Gasket Shawl by Amanda M. Williams
Yarn: Outlaw Yarn Bohemia Worsted in colour “Troy”.

This shawl is a representation of the Sierpinski Triangle - a self-similar object known as a fractal. The shawl is what mathematicians call an approximate fractal because it is not infinite in its complexity like a ‘real’ fractal. But approximate fractals are all we can hope for in the real world! This is a Level 6 approximate fractal because it contains 6 scaled copies of itself.

Deviations from the pattern:

• Instead of picking up stitches to make a border after the body of shawl is complete, I created a garter stitch border as I knit the body by adding K3 to the beginning and end of each row.

• I made a Level 6 shawl instead of the Level 5 in the pattern. I used worsted weight yarn, so this allowed me to create the extra level without using too much yarn, or creating a giant shawl!

Note: There is a slight error in the way the designer explains how to repeat the chart. Row 69 should follow Row 5 of the chart, not Row 3 as shown in the colour-coded diagram.
